The
Hacettepe Institute of Population Studies
The Hacettepe Institute of Population Studies was
established in 1966, as a national centre concerned with education and research
in population studies.
The Institute's objectives are:
...
to
provide education in the field of demography,
... to
carry out research on the demographic, social, economic, cultural and medical
aspects of population issues,
... to
create public awareness on population problems,
... to improve and extend the development of applied population studies,
... to organise and participate in academic and applied studies in
the field of demography and population studies.
In accordance with these objectives, the
activities of the Institute can be classified under three broad categories:
...
education
...
research
... production
and dissemination of demographic data and publications.
The Institute is the only academic institution in
Turkey providing postgraduate education in the field of population. Postgraduate
degree programs are offered in the Technical Demography and Economic & Social
Demography Departments of the Institute.
Results of national and subnational field surveys
and research studies carried out by the Institute since the late 1960's have
been widely utilised by national and international agencies. This has accredited
the Institute with a central role in the collection and provision of demographic
data and information to all concerned circles. Information disseminated by the
Institute have always guided policy makers and service providers in Turkey: The
State Planning Organisation, for instance, has extensively incorporated survey
results in the national five-year development plans, while various Ministries
have used these results in assessing the impact of their services.
Serving as a major link between academic and
non-academic circles, the Institute maintains close relations with Turkish
governmental and non-governmental agencies, and with international
organisations, including those based in Turkey and abroad. The Institute is an
associate member of the European Association of Population Studies.
As the leading institution in population studies
in Turkey, the Institute has organised two National Population Conferences, in
1968 and 1975. To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Institute's
establishment, the Institute organised the third National Population Conference
in November 1997. As part of the activities to celebrate the Institute's 30th
year, an Alumni was formed in 1997, to bring together graduates of the Institute
since 1967.
